Volunteering….
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word VOLUNTEER is described as, ‘one who renders a service or takes part in a transaction while having no legal concern or interest.’
However, as we look at one of our most valuable assets for our organization here at J&A Racing, a volunteer is so much more than that simple definition.
Let’s be honest, we would not be able to put on our world-class races without the thousands of volunteers we’ve had over the course of many years. These groups or individuals give freely of their time to support our runners who are following their dreams on race day. They get up early in the morning, no matter the weather, eager to help, always with a smile on their faces. They enjoy giving back and realize it is something bigger than themselves.
The tasks are simple but needed.
As runners chug, pull and prod themselves to complete the journey they started, these volunteers make it a little easier for them to cross the finish line. It is because of volunteers that runners can enjoy that much-needed mid-race hydration, sugary treat or encouraging cheer zone. After each runner has gone by, it is our volunteers that pick up the cups and trash to ensure the community is left as nice as it was before the race.
Let’s talk beer!
We know many people run for adult beverages at the end of the race. Tired and thirsty, runners drag themselves to the stations where volunteers are eagerly waiting with a cold beverage!
Then there is the finish line.
Each runner’s dream is realized. It does not matter if it is your first, 10th or 100th race, each person sets out with the same goal- crossing that finish line. Once again, guess who is waiting there cheering them on. Volunteers spend countless hours in the finish chute presenting medals, drinks or other items while offering congratulations for a job well done.
On your next race day, take a moment to look around at all the faces of those helping you each step of the way and give them a high five or a ‘thank you’!
