J&A Racing is committed to youth fitness, both to promote a whole family active lifestyle, and to help combat childhood obesity. The following is an overview of the youth fitness programs available throughout the year.
Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile
Elementary aged children in this program run or walk 25.2 miles from January to March, either in school or at home, and then run the “final mile” of their full marathon on Saturday of Shamrock Marathon Weekend. Cash prizes are awarded to the three schools with the highest percentage of student participation. Students are also encouraged to help other children through fundraising efforts to benefit the title sponsor, Operation Smile, a children’s charity which performs cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries around the world.
Big Blue 1K
The 1K is a race for children 12 and under. Kids will make their way to a finish inside ODU’s state-of-the-art game day home of the football Monarchs, Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium.
Old Point National Bank MINI Monster 1K
This one mile fun run begins on Atlantic Avenue on 20th Street and finishes on the Boardwalk at 20th Street. You will have fun waving at your friends on the crowd filled streets.
NORFOLK HARBOR ONE MILE
In this exciting new event, children will run or walk 12.1 miles in school or at home prior to the event, and then run the “final mile” of their half marathon distance at the race. To stress the dual importance of both fitness and literacy, the three elementary schools with the highest percentage of participation in the Harbor Lights Final Mile will receive a prize of books or other literary materials for their school! Youth Fitness Fanatic Program
Children 12 and under who complete any five J&A Racing events – of any distance – in a calendar year will be designated a J&A Racing Youth Fitness Fanatic and receive a special prize at the end of the year.
Youth Fitness Initiative
As a means of ensuring as many children as possible can take part in J&A Racing youth fitness events, the Youth Fitness Initiative program awards grants each year to eight local Title 1 schools so that as many as 250 students from those schools can participate in the Norfolk Harbor Final Mile in the fall, and the Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile in the Spring.
