Youth Fitness Initiative

The J&A Racing Youth Fitness Initiative is a program which began in 2012 to expand the opportunity for local elementary students from economically disadvantaged communities to take part in the Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile.  In 2014, the program was expanded to include Norfolk public school elementary students for the Norfolk Harbor Final Mile.

Each year, J&A Racing awards 50 race entry scholarships apiece to two local elementary schools for the Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile.  In the fall, 25 race entry scholarships apiece are awarded to two Norfolk elementary schools in conjunction with the Norfolk Harbor Final Mile.  In addition, J&A Racing provides guidance and assistance with after school running clubs and other running programs to those same schools.

Students who take part in the Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile program agree to run or walk 25.2 miles in the months preceding the event, and then run their “final mile” of the full marathon distance on race day.  Students taking part in the Norfolk Harbor Final Mile program run or walk 12.1 miles prior to the event, and then the “final mile” of their half marathon distance on race day.
