Over 1,300 participants, kicked off their Saturday morning with the 2024 Getem Services Big Blue 5K presented by Bon Secours!
The course offered runners a scenic tour of the beautiful Old Dominion University campus, winding through tree-lined sidewalks, past the iconic Monarch Fountain, and even across the field at L.R. Hill Sports Complex. What made this 5K truly special? Along the route, participants were energized by the enthusiastic support of the ODU Baseball, Cheerleading, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Soccer, Swim and Tennis teams. Adding to the excitement, the Volleyball team were all smiles and energy as they handed out popsicles to help runners keep their cool.
After seeing the sites of the ODU campus, it was time for a truly touchdown-worthy finish! Participants raced through the S.B. Ballard Stadium tunnel and across Kornblau Field to cross the finish on the 50 yard line.
Once they received their finisher medal, they were ready to celebrate at the post-race tailgate – complete with beer, pizza and live music…but the day doesn’t end there! Then it was time for the youngsters to shine! The 1K took off and kiddos ran 1 kilometer to cross the same epic finish line as the 5K-ers!
Congrats to our tape breaking top finishers:
- Top Male Finisher: Mike Kapetanakis, 17:22
- Top Female Finisher: S. Konnar Ansell 20:23
In addition to the sweaty miles and big smiles, $5,000 was raised for the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation towards a scholarship endowment.
Another amazing year and we can’t wait to do it again – but in April! Yes – you read that correctly! The Getem Services Big Blue 5K presented by Bon Secours will return April 2025.
