Having trouble deciding which race (or races) to run? Here are some things to think about before you hit “register now”.
While we’re enjoying the long summer days, time at the beach, and all those yummy cookouts, it can be very easy to put off planning for the fall. However, now is the time to start thinking about your fall race schedule. You’ll beat price increases and have time to nail down your training schedule if you go ahead and put a race on the calendar now.
Gut Check: What’s Your Motivation?
There are so many reasons to run – for your health, for fun, for camaraderie. But what do you want out of your next race? Maybe you really want to PR in a certain distance. Perhaps you need to have a race on the calendar to keep you motivated during the sweaty summer months. Or maybe you just want to find a really fun race so you have something to look forward to later this year. Figure out why you want to race this fall, and then think about which events will help you feed that desire.
Weather Matters
Some people love running in warm weather – I am not one of those people. Give me 40 degrees on race day and I’m smiling all the way to the finish line. While I run year round, I schedule my goal races in the cooler months since that is when I really enjoy racing and I am mentally better equipped for a PR. Think about how early or late in the season a race falls so you can run in your favorite conditions.
Course Concerns
Be sure to look out for things like how big a race is, how flat or hilly it is, whether there is course entertainment, and if spectators turn out in droves. Most websites have at least some of this information, but you can also tell a lot from pictures on the event’s social media sites (as well as comments). By choosing a race that has a vibe you like, you will enjoy your miles even more.
All the Extras
Sure, the actual race is important. But there are other things that go into race weekend that make running enjoyable. Are you into all the bling? Scope out race bling and swag on social media to find which events will provide you with great keepsakes. Love a celebration? Check out races that feature a post-race party or treat you to food/beer at the finish line.
Phone a Friend
Check in with your running buddies to see what races interest them. Running is more fun with friends, whether you just meet up on race weekend or commit to training together. And by asking others you may discover a really fun event you didn’t know about before.
